A Nøkken/Nacken/Nix tale; no title yet.

Well - since I've been yammering on about the short story I'm working on, here is an excerpt.

Note that it hasn't had a final edit. Hell - I'm still workin' on it, and I still don't have a title - lol:

There was a knock at her cabin door. Lunchtime.

“I’ll be right there” she said out loud, rising slowly from the bed. When she reached the door, she looked through the peek hole, and saw a flash of red.

“Room service” came a familiar deep voice from the other side.

“Oh Jesus” Mara muttered, right before opening the door. “Just leave the cart here…” She raised an eyebrow at the gorgeous bouquet of red roses in the center of the cart. She glanced up to find a sheepish look on Erik’s face.

“Will you forgive me – please?” he asked, when he entered the room.

Mara nodded and stepped aside. Life is too short to hold a grudge, she mused. A sharp pain crept down her right thigh bone, as she repeated the old adage in her mind. In her case, life was literally going to be too short.

“Are those from you, or are they part of the arrangement?” She asked wearily.

Erik remained quiet as he set up her small table. After he poured her tea, he finally looked up through his thick dark blond lashes.

“Yes. They are from me, Mara. My bluntness was horrible, and I am sorry.” His face reddened. “In my bouts of loneliness, I sometimes forget how to interact with people.”

Mara raised a brow when she sat down. She couldn’t, for the limited life of her, figure out how someone like him could ever be lonely. Thor’s probably got a woman at every port of call, she mused, with a chuckle.

“What is so funny?” Erik asked, with a perturbed expression.

Mara picked up a toast point, and dipped it into a small shallow bowl of salmon pate. “You having bouts of loneliness. You work on a cruise ship, surrounded by people.” She took a bite from the toast, and let out a sigh. “This is yummy.”

When Erik didn’t respond, Mara looked up at him. She was taken aback by the bleak look upon his face. He reminded her of a big, sad golden retriever. She suppressed another urge to laugh.

“Well – I must be about my other duties” he murmured before leaving.
